TENORIO, DEVANCE HEROICS HELP ALASKA TO OVERTIME THRILLER WIN OVER MERALCO

The Alaska Aces lost import LD Williams barely four minutes into the game and they looked defeated
with three minutes remaining in regulation, trailing Meralco by 11 points.

Then the unexpected happened.

L.A. Tenorio warmed up in the second half and came away with a career-high 33 points, including two
clutch 3-point shot in the closing seconds of regulation as the Aces stunned the Meralco Bolts,
104-101 in overtime Thursday at the Araneta Coliseum.

Then Joe Devance, who wasn’t supposed to play with a second-degree sprained right ankle, took
over, knocking six points in overtime as Alaska outscored Meralco, 10-7 in extra session. Devance
finished with 19 points that went with his eight rebounds, eight assists and three blocks.

“To be honest nag-cross sa mind ko na we can’t win without LD minus his rebounding and
intensity. But during the break napag-usapan namin na magandang challenge into. And we did it,”
related Tenorio, who exploded with all his points in the second half after going scoreless in the
first.

“LA did everything to bring us back. It’s incredible to watch LA do that kind of stuff,” said
Alaska coach Tim Cone, who also heaped praises for Devance.

“Joe wasn‘t supposed to play. His ankle was still swollen like a tennis ball. I guess he got
inspired by Kobe Bryant. He said he got some pain but can go through it and was ready to play. But
in my mind I wasn’t playing him,” Cone said.

Alaska improved to 5-2 (win-loss) record with their first win in three overtime games this
conference – all against Manny Pangilinan teams -- and kept the Aces in the hunt for an outright
semifinal berth.

It was a frustrating loss for the Bolts, who controlled the game for most parts and appeared to have
sealed the win when Champ Oguchi hit a 3-point shot that gave them a 94-83 advantage with 3:08
remaining.

As a result, they had their two-game streak snapped and, worse, their fifth defeat in seven games
pushed them on the brink of elimination.

Oguchi scored 30 points, Sol Mercado had 24 and Mark Cardona added 23 for the Bolts, who went
scoreless in the last three minutes of regulation.

Tenorio’s successive 3-pointers capped a sensational performance by the smart Alaska guard and an
11-point cluster by the Aces in the fourth.

Alaska could have won it in regulation but Cyrus Baguio (17 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists) missed
his second free throw with 0.3 of a second remaining that sent the game into overtime.

Williams, who averaged 24.7 poind 10.3 rebounds in his first six games, was ejected with 7:52 to
play in the fourth after being whistled with a flagrant foul penalty two after landing an elbow on
Cardona’s head while trying to protect the basketball with his eyes shut. (DBC)

The scores:

Alaska 104 – Tenorio 33, De Vance 19, Baguio 17, Thoss 9, Borboran 5, Eman 5, Williams 4, Dela
Cruz 4, Custodio 4, Cablay 4, Thiele 0.

Meralco 101 -- Oguchi 30, Mercado 24, Caradona 23, Espinas 10, Ross 7, Taulava 5, Isip 2, Hugnatan
0, Aquino 0, Gamalinda 0, Ritualo 0.

Quarterscores: 25-27; 43-51; 68-82; 94-94; 104-101.

Yap, Simon deliver big as Llamados upstage hard-fighting Gin Kings

James Yap completed what Peter June Simon started off as Derby Ace bucked off losing a 17-point first quarter lead to turn back Barangay Ginebra, 96-89, Sunday in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

Simon scored seven of his 20 points in a two-minute span to put the Llamados in front, 87-85, before Yap came in and took over the game.

The two-time PBA Most Valuable Player hit five of his 25 markers inside the final two minutes, including the dagger trey that stretched the lead to 94-87 with 46 seconds left.

The Llamados have now evened their record at 2-2 following a 121-92 rout of Air21 last week.

“Malaking tulong talaga si PJ sa amin dahil nag step up siya especially nung wala ako," said Yap. “Kaya nung pumasok ako, turn ko naman to step up for the team."

Yap also had three assists, a block, and surprisingly, 10 rebounds, none more important than the offensive rebound he grabbed on a missed shot by Shamari Spears, leading to an easy putback and giving the Llamados an 89-85 lead.

Spears finished with 21 points and got a possible second lease on life with the Llamados.

“Magandang panalo para sa amin ito dahil mataas ang kumpiyansa ng team ngayon," said Yap as the Llamados look forward to the possible return of star center Kerby Raymundo by next week.

Derby Ace jumped the gun early, racing to a 26-9 lead late in the first quarter.

But the Kings settled down in the second, cutting the deficit to a manageable 42-38 count at the break.

Ginebra then took the lead for the first time at 49-48 on a jump shot by JC Intal at the 6:59 mark of the third.

With import Nate Brumfield powering his way inside and Willie Miller scoring on spectacular shots, the Kings soared to an 81-74 lead as the Llamados appeared to have lost steam.

Spears, however, led Derby Ace back, in tandem with Simon. A booming three-pointer and a turnaround jumper off Ronald Tubid by the sweet-shooting guard capped an 11-2 run by the Llamados to surge ahead for good.

The Kings, who suffered their second straight loss for a 1-2 card, threatened for the last time at 91-87 on a split charity by Mark Caguioa, but Yap drained the three-pointer that proved to be the final nail on Ginebra’s coffin.

Brumfield again topscored for Ginebra with 29 points, mostly coming from the shaded lane. But the import shot only 13-of-21 from the free throw line.

Caguioa added 16 points and Willie Wilson contributed 10 while leading that big Ginebra comeback in the second period. - KY, RCJ, GMA News

NEW 4-FOR-3 SMB-AIR21 DEAL APPROVED

San Miguel Beer is moving heaven and earth in its rebuilding effort and desperate bid to infuse
fresh blood into its aging roster

The most successful franchise in the Philippine Basketball Association amended its trade offer to
Air 21 on Wednesday, two days after Commissioner Chito Salud rejected the two teams’ attempt to
swap players.

In their initial agreement, SMB’s was to ship Danny Seigle, Mick Pennisi and Joseph Yeo to Air 21
in exchange for rookies Noy Baclao, Rabeh Al-Hussaini and Rey Guevarra.

Unfortunately, Salud torpedoed the deal after careful study.

The league commissioner said the exchange “favors only one side”.

In their desire to address the team’s concern sooner than later, SMB officials didn’t give up.
They returned back to the drawing board and worked on a modified list of players to swap in exchange
for Air 21’s rookie trio.

Although Seigle remained in the modified proposal, SMB struck out the names of Pennisi and Yeo.

With Seigle in the list are Dorian Pena, Dondon Hontiveros and Paul Artadi.

Speaking before sportswriters while awaiting the Talk N’ Text-Powerade game on Wednesday evening,
Salud said the revised trade proposal is a marked improvement over the previous 3-on-3 deal.

“I find this revised trade to be acceptable because each team is giving up assets of equal value
in order to compensate for what each team envisions as significant additions to their respective
ballclubs,” Salud said.

“In my judgment this is not a one sided deal. I believe this is a fair trade between two
teams.”

Salud also took the opportunity to remind teams to be circumspect when exercising trades in the
future.

“Fans will know if a trade is fair or lopsided. All trades will be judged by their fairness,”
he stressed.

Seigle is 34 years old, Pena and Hontiveros are both 33 while Artadi is 29. In contrast, Baclaso,
Al-Hussaini and Guevarra are in their early 20s.

By moving their three veterans, the Beermen gave away experience in exchange for youth to keep pace
with young and quicker teams and hopefully stay competitive in the future conferences.

At the same time, they also hope to develop a new core around their new acquisitions.

The Express made the rookie trio the top three picks of last year’s Annual Draft with Baclao
emerging as the surprise No. 1 pick.

Beside experience, Air 21 also stands to acquire dependable players who could man its weak spot.
Pena could easily provide the Express with a dominating inside presence while Seigle and Hontiveros
offer an offensive threat on a consistent basis. Artadi could provide Air 21 instant energy off the
bench as a reserve guard. (DBC)
